In 2015, lifelong music fan and freelance journalist David James Young set out with a handheld recorder to tell and share stories of as many musicians as he could find.
Named after The Wonder Years song of the same name, All My Friends Are in Bar Bands was hatched conceptually as a podcast to go through musicians' origin stories, personal touring experiences and reflections on both where they've come from and where they're going.
Across three years, Bar Bands has brought a myriad of guests across genre and background. It's ranged from some of the biggest names in contemporary Australian music to some of the most promising up-and-comers, from international touring artists to weekend warriors.
From Amy Shark to Alex Lahey; Gang of Youths to Gareth Liddiard; Courtney Barnett to Cub Sport... Bar Bands has pulled up stools with the best of them,
and there's plenty where that came from.
In April, the podcast celebrated its 100th episode with a live recording at the Red Rattler Theatre in Sydney. Guest for the show included singer-songwriter Thelma Plum, Frenzal Rhomb frontman Jason Whalley and the original Red Wiggle, Murray Cook.
Entertaining, informative and intimate, All My Friends Are in Bar Bands is a worthwhile listen every single week. You just never know which friends David will rope in next.
